When communication between team members is fluid, an organization thrives. Projects get completed on time, nothing gets overlooked, and people feel confident in their roles and responsibilities. Communication really is the key to a successful workplace environment.
So, what are some communication strategies we can use to ensure our teams and our organizations reach their full potential?
Here are three proven communication strategies that you can start using right away:
1. Set clear project objectives, timelines and tasks
It’s impossible to complete a task you didn’t know existed! Make sure team members are clear on the scope of a project as well as individual responsibilities. Encourage team members to ask questions when they are unsure. This goes both ways! A leader should always ask his or her team questions, as this kind of attitude encourages open communication, transparency and trust.
2. Engage in real-time communication and regular check-ins
Email is great, but often, an in-person conversation is the better option. Speaking directly with team members can eliminate confusion and reduce wasted time and effort. When an in-person check-in isn’t feasible, instant messaging is the next best option. Real-time communication is essential to ensure projects flow smoothly and work gets done in a timely manner!
3. Be overly inclusive
When you set up a meeting or send an email, make it a habit to include all team members, even if they are only peripherally involved. If you’re not sure whether a person needs to be kept in the loop, choose caution, and include them anyways. It never hurts to include everybody in a conversation, but it can hurt not too. Being overly inclusive also helps create an environment of belonging.
By using these simple communication strategies in your day to day, you can foster a positive team environment where projects are completed in a streamlined and stress-free manner!
