Millennials have been positively transforming the workplace for over a decade. They are the generation that seeks career growth and development, enhanced efficiency through processes of innovation and automation and value employers that are socially responsible.
By 2020, Millennials are expected to make up the majority of the workplace, including many leadership and decision-making roles. At The Acquisition Group, we appreciate the curious attitudes and positive changes that this generation brings to our company’s innovative processes, leadership styles and contributions to overall success.
Here are a few things to note when thinking about the Millennial generation and how they can positively affect your workplace:
Millennials have consumed more media than any other generation
With the evolution of mass media, Millennials have consumed more information from technology and their devices than previous generations have in an entire lifetime. This also means Millennials have more access to information and education – readily available at their fingertips – which enables them to learn quicker and retain skills much faster than previous generations.
Millennials are socially responsible
With the growing importance of the environment and civic engagement, Millennials appreciate knowing where their products are made, where they come from and how employers are working to improve the communities in which they live. These individuals also show a willingness to participate in charity events, commend employer-led volunteerism and value diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
Millennials value flexibility
For Millennials, workdays aren’t typically 9-5. They are more likely to work harder if you allow them the flexibility to work remotely (on occasion) or clock-in “flex hours” – there may be days where they start later or leave mid-day for an appointment, but they are willing to stay late and work on weekends to ensure the job gets done. In addition, the Millennial generation is motivated by simple acts of appreciation, such as staff lunches, after-work socials and employer-led events. These social outings allow Millennials to feel rewarded for their hard work.
Millennials are thoughtful leaders and seek collaboration and feedback
Once-a-year performance reviews just won’t cut it. Millennials value ongoing feedback and collaborative goal setting, which allows them to grow, evolve and voice their thoughts and concerns in a fair and rewarding atmosphere. This generation is also not as receptive to traditional management structures and prefer a team-driven culture where they are encouraged to lead with their own ideas.
By embracing the characteristics of Millennials – and helping them to achieve their ambitions and goals – it will ultimately lead to a more effective, collaborative and innovative workplace.
